Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This sequel to Win the Fat War comes from the nutrition editor of Prevention magazine, who explains that the urge to indulge in sweets may result from low energy, mindless habit, genetics, stress, hormones, or thirst disguised as hunger. Overindulgence can contribute to obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, yeast infections, a suppressed immune system, and other nutritional deficiencies. Using concrete examples of people who have faced down a raging sweet tooth, depressed moods, or excess weight, the author provides a "winning action" or behavior-modifying tip with each vignette.

Product Description

Win the SUGAR War
100 Real-Life Stories of Conquering Cravings-And Pounds

Nature never intended for us to live without sugar. In fact, our love of sweets is programmed into our genes. It guaranteed our survival as a species.

Of course, Nature never anticipated the serve-yourself soda fountains at convenience stores, the dessert trays in restaurants, or the candy displays at supermarket checkouts. These days, we can eat as much sugar as we want. And we want too much.

When we overindulge in sweets, it's not just our waistlines that suffer. Various studies have linked excessive sugar consumption with conditions ranging from fatigue and tooth decay to immune dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies, and insulin resistance and diabetes.

Even though we don't need to give up sugar completely, just cutting back can seem daunting--especially when our genes are saying, "Go ahead! Eat up!" But you can do it. Win the Sugar War will show you how, using real-world solutions from real-life women and men who tamed their appetites for sweets and, in many cases, trimmed unwanted pounds to boot.

Bethanny Davis dropped from a size 16 to a 10 once she found that she could satisfy her chocolate tooth with miniature candy bars. Robert Fisher lost 70 pounds in 6 months by taking walks to shake off his midafternoon sugar cravings. Ruby Goldsmith shed 80 pounds--and brought her diabetes under control--after she started sending leftover desserts home with her dinner guests.

Their stories, and 97 others, will touch your heart and stoke your willpower. If they can succeed in defeating their "sugar genes," you can, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another inspiring collection of success stories!, January 2, 2002
By A Customer
This is a great book, just like the previous "Win the Fat War", etc. I have a lot of weight to lose, and reading about other people's success inspires me and makes me feel less alone in the struggle. There are many before and after pictures too, which is nice. I'm never without this book, or one of the others in the "Win the War" series - whenever I'm tempted to overeat, I read an excerpt, and it stops me from sabotaging myself. I think anyone looking to break bad eating habits and/or lose weight will appreciate this book, and be inspired by it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring, February 28, 2004
By Donna G. Grayson "Donna G. Grayson" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
The main thing I really liked about this book was "Winning Actions" sections which was like a helpful hints. It gave alot of real-life advice on cutting down on sugar in the diet.
Also great was all the real-life stories. Those real-life stories are very inspiring.
The book is very easy to read, divided up into short sections.
I would recommend this to anyone who is trying to change their eating habits and wants practical ideas.
