Finding the right book
There are plenty of gardening books on the market, some that even look alike. So how do you tell them apart?
First, check the publisher. "
Complete Home Gardening: Growing Secrets and Techniques for Gardeners" by Miranda Smith (Creative Homeowner, $24.95) has an American publisher, so you won't have to worry that it's an import that glosses over the differences between gardening in Britain and North America.
Then check the contents. The best books, including this one, are organized in a logical progression: preparing the garden; bulbs, perennials and annuals; vines, vegetables and herbs; discovering specialty plants; finally, dealing with pests and diseases. Make sure there are lots of illustrations and photos. This book has almost 600 color photographs and 267 illustrations, all of good quality.
Finally, look for the little extras. Does it have an in-depth section on water gardens? Are there well-illustrated, step-by-step instructions for the beginning gardener? This book has all of the above, as well as a good plant index. That's what distinguishes it from the rest of the pack.
