Editorial Reviews

Product Description

From innovative fonts and commercial logos to products and artists' books, the work of graphic design collective Thirst (3st) is unmistakable: dazzling in form, intellectually challenging, incorporating Real Human Presence, just over the edge of the Discomfort Zone. The first monograph on the design group, Emotion as Promotion is an exuberant manifesto, a collective autobiography, and a brutally honest heart-to-heart with the next generation of design. The volume showcases work known (designs for Gilbert Paper, Gary Fisher Mountain Bikes, Wired magazine, and Absolut vodka), unknown, and notorious.

About the Author

Rick Valicenti is the founder and principal of Thirst, an internationally recognized design consultancy founded more than twenty years ago. The firm is also known for typography and has designed a new font, Infinity, for this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Luxurious yet unpretentious, September 1, 2005
Of all the famous graphic designer vanity books, Rick's is the least pretentious because he actually does the work - He's the man. Nice and thick for the money, good volume/quantity of dead trees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Love, August 2, 2005
Simplistic and beautiful, Emotion as Promotion, surpassed my expectations. Rick Valicenti's brilliance, humor, and talent clearly shine in this entertaining and thought-provoking work. I recommend this big beautiful book to anyone, especially those interested in design.

5.0 out of 5 stars the success of failure, October 14, 2005
Flip through this journal once and you will find it provocative, insightful and entertaining. Valicenti's talent and dexterity is impressive as is his curiosity and almost conceited thirst for exploration.

Sit in the park reading it carefully, you will find the most compelling portions of the book are those describing thirst failures in detail. Salvation lies here for the reader, both designer and client.
