Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 UpThe Door in the Dragon's Throat reads like a shortened version of Raiders of the Lost Ark, but the hero succeeds because, in his own words, "we serve a mighty God who is greater than any curse." Dr. Cooper and his children, Jay and Lila, have come to Nepur, in the Middle East, to enter the Dragon's Throat and unlock the door which legend says hides a treasure. Every imaginable disaster befalls theman explosion, a kidnapping, falling boulders, a viper attack, earthquakesbut in spite of numerous setbacks, the expedition succeeds. The writing is full of cliches and inconsistencies: a desert setting, a greedy king and his sly aide, a cavern in the earth where the forces of good and evil are fighting for control, an archaeologist who brandishes a gun as readily as he prays to God. The dialogue is stilted, and the vocabulary is too difficult for young readers who might overlook the poor characterization and heavily imposed theme of Christian belief. Far better fantasy adventures are Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising (Atheneum, 1973), Nancy Bond's Country of Broken Stone (Atheneum, 1980) and Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword (Greenwillow, 1982). Product Description

A mystery as old as the desert sands…

When teenagers Jay and Lila Cooper and their archaeologist father travel to Nepur, an uninviting land of deserts and danger, they must search to uncover the truth behind an ancient legend. Locals claim that inside a dark cavern called the Dragon's Throat is a forbidden Door that brings certain death to anyone who tries to open it.

Armed with the knowledge that God is more powerful than any legend or curse, Jay and Lila plunge down into the Dragon's Throat, determined to find out what awaits them on the other side of the Door. This daring tale will have you on the edge of your seat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome books from an awesome writer, January 29, 2003
By Dave (from Gondor) - See all my reviews
It's Frank Peretti's brilliant novel writing skills...condensed! It's a super-cool family of archeologists--minus a mother--who investigate phenomena in the spirit of Indiana Jones, only with a Christian perspective.

The Door in the Dragon's Throat introduces us to our heroes, as they travel to the deserts of Nepal to investigate the mysterious Door that causes so much fear and panic. Their Christian beliefs are challenged, their lives threatened, and their strength tested before the books end. And you won't believe the ending. It's...out of this world. ;)

It's an action-packed mini-novel for kids, and even grown-ups, if they are so inclined. There's action, suspense, intrigue, and some scary stuff too! And you gotta love Dr. Coopers .357!

Here's a little parental warning though, in case you are wondering what kind of stuff might be inappropriate for younger kiddos. The group come across some skeletons of past searchers, and there is a VERY intense scene at the end...but I read them when I was only 10, and it didn't give me any nightmares.

Excellent novels, with great Christian morals packed in too. Forget Harrison Ford! Grab a copy of...The Door in the Dragon's Throat!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Every Written, November 6, 1998
By A Customer
The Door in the Dragon's Throat was so powerful and exciting. I could have read it all in two minutes, it was so good. Frank Peretti has always been my favorite author because sometimes, I like to read 100 pages or so of how powerful God really is compared to Satan. I thought it was very thrilling and it kept my heart pounding the whole time I read it because it is reality. Here is another 5 star comment on this wonderful book. Don't listen to that 1 star comment because they don't know what they talking about! They are crazy to think an excellent Christian book showing how God is so powerful is bad for their children! It is definately a must for all young Christian readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Series, January 3, 2003
By Dan (Heidleberg, Germany) - See all my reviews
When I was younger I read the first four books in this series. I had no idea that religious fiction could be so good. Now after reading several of his other works, Peretti has become my favorite author. As for the guy who claims "hidden agendas," Peretti is a well known RELIGIOUS writer. I also believe that on the back of the book it mentions the characters spiritual beliefs. I didn't find the characters shallow, but strong in heart. Every book was suspensful and hard to put down.
