The first part of the book discusses topics of basic husbandry, such as grooming, horse housing, record keeping, feeds and feeding, stable vices, and restraint techniques, followed by a more in-depth discussion of the anatomy, physiology, and common ailments of major body systems. The sections on basic husbandry focus on the routine interaction between horse and handler and many aspects of caring and providing for horses. This should be especially helpful for the novice owner.
About the Author
Dr. Michael Ball started in the horse business grooming, riding and managing horses and worked professionally in the industry for six years before undertaking his medical studies. Today, he is a faculty member at Cornell University where he earned degrees in veterinary medicine and animal science, completed his residency in large animal internal medicine and requirements for a Master of Science degree in Pharmacology. A resident of Ithaca, New York, Dr. Ball wrote Understanding Equine First Aid and his wife, Dr. Christina Cable, is the author of Understanding the Foal.
