When H. Irving Hancock wrote Jiu-Jitsu Combat Tricks in 1904, this 2,000-year-old Japanese martial art was essentially unknown outside Asia, and his book helped introduce it to the West. For this book Hancock, a well-known writer and war correspondent who had trained in jiu-jitsu in Japan in the 1890s, selected "combat tricks" that were of most value to the Western fighting man: "Fighting is an ugly business from the nature of things, and the Japanese contend that any means that brings victory is justifiable." Though much has changed in the last century -- especially the explosion of jiu-jitsu in the Americas with the advent of Brazilian jiu-jitsu - the basic principles of combat jiu-jitsu remain the same as outlined in Hancocks seminal book.
