Essential, August 13, 2008
You need something cool on the coffee table, right? And well, that Madonna "Sex" book is kinda dated and has started drawing odd stares from visitors. Well, replace it with something that's real - Tim Sale: Black and White - Revised and Expanded. Probably the most influential illustrator working today, Tim Sale brings a keen sense of design right alongside superior draughtmanship and combines them to make stunning pictures. Yes, some of them have appeared in comic books. And some on television. But don't turn your nose up at that. This is serious art made by a committed artist. Don't miss out.

A Fine Selection of Sale's Body of Work, August 12, 2009
Image Comics has, in recent years, been publishing a series of quality art books by a number of talented artists - including Frank Cho, Greg Horn, J. M. Linsner, and Brian Bolland, and Top Cow, one of Image's imprints, has been publishing books on the art of Marc Silvestri, Witchblade, The Darkness, David Finch, etc. Add Tim Sale: Black and White (hereafter, I'll refer to it as B&W) to that list of quality books.
Tim Sale, you might recall, is the artist behind a number of great miniseries for DC and Marvel (on which he collaborated with Jeph Loeb, who contributes to the book) - Batman: The Long Halloween, Superman for All Seasons, Spider-Man: Blue, Hulk: Gray, and others. Loeb is largely a pen-and-ink stylist, a master of moody chiaroscuro and caricature. You get plenty of both in this book, along with a lot of sketches, a long (and I mean looooong) interview with the man himself which makes for interesting reading, and even a gallery of his color work, including the paintings which he did for Heroes (I've never seen the show, so these didn't really make a big splash with me...).
What sets Sale apart from other artists is the simplicity of his style - in this, he is perhaps more like a Mike Mignola than anyone else. His figures are drawn for an immediate impact and recognition. There really is no subtlety there - indeed, some of his drawings are so uncomplicated that you wonder if you couldn't draw this stuff yourself - but in other drawings the level of detail and the sheer genius of composition will leave you absolutely stunned.
The book itself, like all of the Image art books, is well printed, on good quality paper, and has a sturdy hardcover binding. The only real drawback to this book is that there are some typos in the text - a common problem in almost every book you buy nowadays. For those interested in Tim Sale or in comic art in general, you can't go wrong. Highly recommended for any comic book fan with an appreciation for art.

Great coffee Table Book, February 19, 2009
For any one who is interested in the wonderful art of Tim Sale this is the book for you. This Hardcover, beautifully bound book is full of stunning artworks from all areas of Tim sales art archives.
There are also some very interesting interviews which shed light on Tim's working relationship with Jeph Loeb and how Tim came to work on the Heroes TV show.
with a wide selection of Art from Tim's comic works, convention sketches, commisioned pin ups, artwork for the Heroes TV show as well as some of his personal works, with the added bonus of a collection of coloured artworks as well.
Truly a stunning book and one that would be cherished by any fan of Tim Sale.
