Product Description

The mischievous face of the Siberian Husky is a familiar sight wherever dog lovers gather, and you don't even need snow or a sled to appreciate the breed's many fine qualities. The spirit of this able athlete and able friend can be recognized throughout this bright, new book. Like the other titles in Howell's Best of Breed Library, this book features chapters on all aspects of caring for and competing with a dog. Written for experienced breeders and novices alike, the book is practical yet complete and includes over 100 full-color photos.

From the Inside Flap

The Siberian Husky The modern Siberian Husky is an interesting study in contrasts. The breed was developed in the harsh environment of northeast Asia as a sled dog the Chukchi people could depend on for reliable transport and as a talented drover to help move their reindeer herds. He carries about him an aspect of the wilderness while at the same time he presents a sleek elegance in appearance and action that are much appreciated by modern dog lovers. After the Siberian was introduced to the world beyond his native borders, his working potential was quickly recognized. Eventually, his natural ability in harness truly became the stuff of legend. The Siberian excelled as a racing dog, as the hero of the incredible serum run to Nome, Alaska to combat a diphtheria epidemic, and in many other amazing exploits. Today the Siberian Husky is also a peerless companion for those who appreciate his special essence. He has come a long way from the snow fields of Siberia, emerging into a highly successful show dog and a beautiful clown who delights in activity, independence and a walk on just this edge of the wild side. Does this make the Siberian a good companion? Just ask anyone who shares life with one.

4.0 out of 5 stars siberspeak, March 28, 2001
Michael Jenning "Siberian Husky - Able Friend, Able Athlete" is great followup to his first book, "The New Complete Siberian Husky". The former being more of a historical account on the evolution of the breed and the story behind the foundation kennels that made possible todays healthy, happy Siberian. Michael has feet in both camps. Not only as a top breeder and show ring, but also past friend to the immortal Lorna Demidoff, owner of the famous and highly influential, Monadnock Kennels. This book is more of an owners manual as it goes into the proper choice, care of, and current activities available for the Siberian Husky. Using a "coffee table format" and quality photos, the book includes chapters on the Iditarod, the Siberian Club of America, and the Show Ring. He doesn't leave many stones unturned as he gives token nod to famous dogs of the breed, interpretations on the standard, and the Siberian's flirtation with celebrity status. He knows his material, as he lives it. Certainly one of the more qualified people around to present this wonderful information on a truly remarkable animal. He knows the mind and spirit of an entity that functions on absolute resolve. With a heart that beats like a chugging locomotive, never to shirk a task, the mascot of all canines - the Siberian Husky.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Husky Book, February 27, 2004
I purchased a siberian husky 1 year ago and wanted to learn as much as I could about the breed. This book says it all. I have bought several other books, and basically they stink. This book is well written, has beautiful pictures and truely says how a husky is. If you are thinking of purchasing a husky or already own one, and want some help in understanding your dog - this book is for you. Cannot say enough about this book. If I could give it more than five stars I would.
