Editorial Reviews

Review
"He delivers nothing. At least nothing we expect." -- Rudy Vanderlans, Emigre Magazine

"There's an intelligent absurdity to his work." -- David Carson

"Wolfe's exquisitely intelligent design appears to be from another time-space continuum." -- Art Chantry --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
An 'uncanny' collection of Shawn Wolfe's most provocative work. In 1984, having spent seven years in and around advertising, Wolfe established Beatkit(tm), the world's first ever anti-brand. It was a brand without a product and was intended to be a shining example of what was sick and wrong in a culture gone mad with consumerism. From 1984 to 2000 Beatkit(tm) sought to expose the dark nature of consumerism, consumption and disposal, all of which escalate the fundamental crises of contemporary life: using up of natural resources, ecological ruin, cynicism, and alienation.

Wolfe used and reused images such as the Bionic Cat and the Removerinstaller until they had achieved the abstract presence of the Nike swoosh. Perhaps the real magic in his work is that it draws us in but delivers nothing.

Features Massive Attack, Panic Now and Too Much of a Good Thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking the language and turning it outside out, April 17, 2000
By drum4tiger (oakland, ca) - See all my reviews
Shawn Wolfe has done it again. Before we knew it he fooled all of us into buying more products that play on our desperate need to buy more products that subvert the idea of buying products by existing as the "non product". What's going on? So nice to look at, you wish these things could walk across your livingroom floor, and not just in your nightmares. I can't explain it--he's speaking a visual language I don't speak but I love to look at. And I think he must be smarter than me because I put his Panic Now stickers all over my car. Is he controlling my mind?

4.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read, April 17, 2000

This has to be the most interesting book ever written. Why? I'm not sure, but if you read it, I think it just might speak for itself.

The title alone is so, well, UNCANNY. It represents the book so concisely, and so profoundly.

I highly recommend reading books, and this is most certainly a book! Enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The time is now seven a.m., April 17, 2000
What's most enjoyable about this book is what I find most genius about Wolfe's artwork itself: He uses the methods by which advertising operates, the co-optation of ideas and trends, and throws it right back in advertising's face. What emerges is just how absurd advertising really is, and in a bigger sense, that we allow ourselves to live in a world in which it dominates. Wolfe is a cultural alarm clock and this book is his wake-up call. Rise and shine people.
