3.0 out of 5 stars This book reads like stereo instructions, November 14, 2001
Gaskell, without a doubt, knows what he is talking about. The man is a genius in archiological editing. This much is clear; what is not clear is the rest of the book. This book is not about what happens to your manuscript after you submit it to an editor, as I had expected, instead it is a book of twelve case studies in archiological editing; that is to say the study of compiling new editions of books based on manuscripts and author-approved editions in an attempt to decide wht the author truly intended for the book.

Gaskell tries to explain this well and I'm sure he is consise and clear to someone in the field, but for the average reader the book comes off as somewhat muddled and confusing. The carts, after they're deciphered, make a good deal of sense. Getting to the point where you understand them is a challenge, though.

If you're interested in the study of manuscripts (either for fun or academically,) then this book will be very helpful. It outlines the problems and benefits of the field. It cites specific examples as recent as 1974 and as ancient as 1592.

If you're an academic in this field or just have an interest in it, this book could be of a good deal of use to you, if you're not in the field, move on.
