Product Description

"Poultry is for the cook what canvas is for the painter. It is served to us boiled, roasted, fried, hot or cold, whole or in pieces, with or without sauce, boned, skinned, stuffed, and always with equal success."

So said Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, nineteenth-century French gastronome, and his words could not be more true today. Chicken inspires not just culinary, but visual, artists. A chicken, it seems, can be depicted as many ways as it can be cooked.

The Artful Chicken, a charmingly unique cookbook, combines heartiness with artiness in 85 all-time favorite recipes illustrated by hundreds of chicken collectibles. Author Linda Arnaud groups the dishes according to method of preparation: Roast & Bake; Grill & Broil; Sauté & Fry; and Stew, Braise & Poach. And although she claims ignorance when it comes to the old "Which came first?" conundrum, Arnaud also devotes a chapter to the delicate craft of egg-cooking.

But Arnaud is not content to put a chicken in every pot. She wants a chicken on every pot - and every tablecloth, salt and pepper shaker, and soup tureen. The cookbook is filled with photos of chicken collectibles. Antique and contemporary, fine and folk art, made from porcelain, pottery, or papier-mâché, it's sure to make a chicken lover crow with pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicken is "little" no more, May 21, 2001
By Carolyn Taranto (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
As a lover of chicken recipes and collectibles, I believe I have found the perfect book. I've enjoyed every recipe I've tried and can't wait for the lavender in my garden to bloom so I can try the Honey and Lavender Baked Chicken Leg recipe.I found the history of chicken information Ms. Arnaud provides in the book to be absolutely charming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking chicken to a new level, November 15, 2001
By Anne (Norwood, MA United States) - See all my reviews
Whether you are looking for that unique chicken recipe for a special occasion, or enjoy learning the history associated with food and traditions, the Artful Chicken is sure to satisfy. It is easy to get lost looking at the colorful photos and reading the descriptive text, but when you are ready, be sure to try the recipe for Chicken Cutlets with Lemons and Capers. It is a quick and very tasty recipe and the author does an excellent job recommending appropriate side dishes and complementary wines. The organization of the book is also effective as the recipes are categorized by cooking styles, with part of one chapter devoted to chicken sandwich recipes. As an added feature, there is a chapter of creative egg recipes for those looking for a new twist on this breakfast favorite.
This book is an artful experience in itself. Bon Apetit!
