Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Compiled by the editors of Walking magazine, the essays in The Walker Within: Forty-five Stories of Motivation and Inspiration for Walkers explore the simple experience of taking a walk, whether as private ritual or bonding time with a child, parent, lover or dog. A few writers describe the role of walking in their writing process; others see walking as an integral part of a struggle with grief or loss. Some essays are pleasingly quirky: Gena Acosta writes about the day she put on her "wicked new lipstick" and walked the New York City marathon, while Ann Hood describes walking a million of miles without getting any fresh air as a flight attendant.

From Library Journal

Gleaned from Walking Magazine, these short tales form a kind of Chicken Soup for Walkers' Souls. Written mostly by freelance writers, the pieces tell picturesquely of sorrows that walking helps alleviate and the joys experienced while walking. The expected descriptions of walking in the rain or with dogs mingle with funny ones like the story about walking from one's hotel to the mall across the interstate, walking in a prison yard, and singing while walking, oblivious to others' stares. Deft phrasing and the wide variety of attitudes toward walking lift this collection above the ordinary. Patrons of all public libraries would enjoy this book.
