Product Description
The twentieth century saw some of the most dramatic changes in national boundaries and identities. At the dawn of a new millennium, Rand McNally, America's premier publisher of maps and atlases, presents a special collection of up-to-date world maps, reflecting all the dizzying changes of the last quarter-century. The atlas also features a special section of U.S. state maps, complete with its own index of locations offering details on hundreds of towns, cities, and landforms.

* Nearly 150 pages of detail-rich maps of the world, completely updated to reflect recent political changes

* Enhanced coverage of the United States in a special section featuring individual maps of all fifty states

* An introductory section containing a primer on cartography and the basics of map-reading; "The Real World," a section providing an in-depth look at world climate, populations, people, and countries; and a time zone map of the world

* The 64-page index includes entries for more than 55,000 places, from cities and towns to political units and geographical features around the world

3.0 out of 5 stars Is this really a World Atlas?, January 1, 2002
By "civmaster" (Princeton, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
I just found out 2/3 content of this atlas is about the United States. And this is actually not what I wanted --- I have a very good US Atlas, but I just wanted a real "world" atlas.
The US maps of this atlas are made pretty well --- you can find almost any small town on a map. But for countries outside US, I just feel dispointed, especially for big countries, like Russia and China, the "resolution" of the map is not so good as my expection.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding World Atlas, December 18, 2001
By George Webster, Ph.D., (Orlando, FL USA) - See all my reviews

A good atlas should be on your bookshelf along with a dictionary, thesaurus, and other references. An atlas has a way of going out of date more rapidly than a dictionary, so it's important to have one that is current, but does not cost a fortune. This volume fills the need wonderfully. The maps are detailed and easy to read. New nations are there, and there are excellent maps of the terrain throughout the world. You can sit in your armchair and travel the world with these remarkably clear maps. There is a huge index of cities and clear information about climate and population around the planet. All this, and the price is amazingly low. It's an excellent atlas for a bargain price.

4.0 out of 5 stars compact atlas, November 15, 2002
By A Customer
This atlas is slim and lightweight compared to other atlases, making it easy to pickup to look something up. The maps are clear and easy to read. Each of the maps in the world map section have scales of elevation and distance printed next to them. A great bargain...

5.0 out of 5 stars great bargain!
This book is a great bargain as it is a sturdy oversized hardcover for the price. I've only looked at it briefly but it appears to be concise as far as geographical information... Read more
