Product Description

From the burnt orange of Yosemite’s sunsets to the cobalt blues and foam greens of the Pacific, Camps and Cottages invites you to make a fresh, bold statement by combining the warmth and comfort of cottage living with a rustic blend of old and new.

Camps and Cottages is a combination of the rustic living style so prevalent prior to World War I and of a more casual style that exploded onto the scene in the 1930s and 1940s, emphasizing excitement, color, and whimsical seaside living. It is cozy, colorful, and truly American. As indicated in Country Home magazine, it has regained momentum and enthusiastic acceptance from those intent on recapturing the art of comfort and a sweeter and far less complicated lifestyle.

Whether the location is New England, the Midwest, the Rockies, or the Pacific coast, Camps and Cottages reflects the form and function of the heartland energized with the color and movement of our country’s forests and seashores.

From the Inside Flap

From the burnt orange of Yosemite's sunsets to the cobalt blues and foam greens of the Pacific, Camps and Cottages invites you to make a fresh, bold statement by combining the warmth and comfort of cottage living with a rustic blend of old and new.

Though the coolness of white may have ruled the 1990s, todays Camps and Cottages look is dedicated to color, using it as a tool of expression as well as a source of energy. It also incorporates interchanging indoor and outdoor living without the traditional boundaries asociated with harsher climates.

Whether the location is New England, mid-America, the Rockies, or the Pacific Coast, Camps and Cottages reflects the form and function of the heartland energized with the color and movement of our country's forests and seashores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Move over, Rachel! Molly's here!, June 21, 2001
By A Customer
If you like cottage-style decor but just can't take any more pink roses, chippy white paint, and floral frou-frou, cleanse your visual palate with Molly Hyde English's refreshing take on cottage style. Camps and Cottages presents a look that will be instantly familiar to anyone who's ever vacationed in a cabin by the lake or in the mountains. It's all-American, family-friendly, cozy and comfortable. In page after page of gloriously photographed interiors, you'll find a wealth of inspiration for transforming your home into a full-time weekend retreat. The emphasis is on color, eclecticism, and whimsy, using camp blankets, rustic furniture, vintage pillows and tablecloths, tourist souveniers, and old signs and paintings to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Camps and Cottages style strikes the perfect balance between the overly masculine "lodge look" and the frilly home-as-boudoir approach of "shabby chic." Get the book, get to the flea market, and you may never feel the need to rent somebody else's vacation home again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Review of Camps and Cottages, September 9, 2001
By A Customer
Camps and Cottages has some nice photographs of interior home furnishings. What I didn't like about the book are several things. The pictures are repeated throughout the book. For the price of this book I want to see original pictures on each page. The use of small pictures, about 1" square is really difficult for the eye to see. Printing text over textured, colored pages is extremely difficult to read. Descriptions are given of various rooms with no pictures to match, causing the reader confusion. Some photographs are cut off, even though the description includes items not seen. Some of the photographs are out of focus.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight to the eye, July 4, 2001
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
In Camps And Cottages: : A Stylish Blend Of Old And New, Molly English draws upon her years of experience providing furnishings for cabins and cottages around the country in order to restore or highlight their 1930s and 40s vintage motif and style that is fully adapted to the comforts and lifestyles of their 1990s era residents. The informative and accessible text is enhanced throughout with Linda Svendsen's superbly presented, full-color photography. The examples of interior decor are drawn from New England, mid-America, the Rockies, and the Pacific Cost against backgrounds ranging from seashore to forest. Whether just browsing it pages for fun or in serious quest for adaptable ideas for redoing or restoring your own rustic cabin or period cottage, Camps And Cottages is a delight to the eye, an inspiration to the mind, and a highly recommended addition to personal or professional interior design reference collections.
