Editorial Reviews

Review
From the reviews of the second edition:

.,."a stimulating read and there should be a copy in every neurosurgical unit in the land." - Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England

"The book succeeds in giving to the Clinical neurophysiologist and the Neurosurgeon, not only very precise and understandable physiological bases but also a valuable practical knowledge on how to deal with Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring in the operating room. a ] Illustrations by explicative drawings are considerably useful; the author must be acknowledged for them. a ] All neurosurgeons should have this book not only in the library of their Institution but also in their own office as a weekly guide to be consulted before surgery." (Marc Sindou, Acta Neurochirurgica, Vol. 148, May, 2006)

Product Description
The premier authority on intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM) provides in a new edition a comprehensive, up-to-date reference on IOM techniques and their anatomical and physiological basis. Dr. Møller offers theoretical and practical guidance regarding electrophysiological recordings in the operating room, how to interpret the results, and how to present them to the surgeon. In addition, the author has added new material on the monitoring of the spinal motor system, of sensory systems, of peripheral nerves, and in skull base surgery. Included are methods for guiding the surgeon in operations, such as microvascular decompression, implantation of electrodes for deep brain stimulation, repair of peripheral nerves and for placement of electrodes for auditory prostheses.

4.0 out of 5 stars better than most IOM books, June 1, 2006
This book is very helpful to its intended reader. (Not for the athletic trainer from London) It covers most areas of intraoperative monitoring in a way that is helpful to the Neurophysiologist or Technologist who already has a good basic understanding of the topic. It does not cover topics such as patient hookup, equipment used, or machine settings in much detail. I would have liked for it to go into more depth in the areas of triggered EMG and the actual disease processes and surgical procedures being monitored, although the later might add too much to one book. I found this book to be interesting enough that I was able to read it without losing interest. The book was well worth the investment considering the limited audience that it is intended for.

5.0 out of 5 stars intra-operative neurophysiologic monitoring, May 10, 2006
By Mark M. Stecker (danville, pa United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Intra-Operative Neurophysiological Monitoring is the second edition of a classic textbook that covers the entire subject of monitoring the function of the nervous system during surgical procedures. Neurophysiologic monitoring has become an increasingly important means of preventing injury during surgical procedures that place the nervous system at risk. This book takes a systems oriented approach to the subject, integrating basic anatomy and physiology with a thorough description of normal responses combined with a discussion of how these responses are affected by anesthesia, blood pressure, and other surgical factors. Typical changes that may be expected during certain surgical procedures are discussed. Motor and sensory systems are discussed as are cranial and peripheral nerves. In addition there are complete discussions of electrode placement, equipment, signal processing and statistical considerations. The book is organized in such a way that the information presented is accessible to both beginners in the field and experts. Overall, this is an important textbook that should be in the libraries of all practitioners in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vivid Read, April 28, 2006
By Vikram "Vikram" (Richardson) - See all my reviews
I was a student in Dr.Moller's class and I tried using some simple neuroscientific principles to read this book well. I abstained from anything that might excite the senses much ( no news, no tv, no checking emails,no phone calls)...then I picked up the text book this weekend and immediately found the visual imagery sharp and distinct, and couldn't put the book down till I finished reading the chapters in the course.
I like that there are basic principles repeated again where necessary, so I could read some advanced chapters without feeling a lacunae in my understanding.
The case studies are definitely useful for me to remember a wave pattern ( gives me context...so the second time I was flipping through the text before the test I could immediately connect with the wave)
