Product Description

There is nothing else available like it that covers so much territory about the basics of starting and running a small software company. Just buy it and read it.

— Thomas Warfield, asharewarelife.com

Micro-independent software vendors, or micro-ISVs, have become both a major source of applications and a realistic career alternative for IT professionals. As for the latterare you a programmer and curious about being your own boss? Where do you turn for information? Until now, online and traditional literature havent caught up with the reality of the post-dot.com bust.

Micro-ISV: From Vision to Reality explains what works and why in todays emerging micro-ISV sector. Currently, thousands of programmers build and deliver great solutions ISV-style, earning success and revenues much larger than you might guess. Written by and for micro-ISVs, with help from some of the leaders of the fieldthis book takes you beyond just daydreaming to running your own business. It thoroughly explores how it is indeed possible to launch and maintain a small and successful ISV business, and is an ideal read if youre interested in getting started.

About the Author
Bob Walsh has been a contract software developer in the San Francisco Bay area for the past 22 years, specializing in desktop information systems. His company, Safari Software, Inc., has for the past decade amazingly focused on the same thing, albeit at a higher hourly rate.

In 2003, as outsourcing finished what the dot.com bust started, he developed MasterList Standard Version, an Excel-based project and task management application. Two years and 40,000 users later, Safari Software, Inc., became a real live tooting micro-ISV by releasing MasterList Professional, a Windows personal project and task management application that, unlike traditional time management tools, gives you total control over your business and personal life while improving how you spend your time.

Before joining the ranks of the computer industry, Walsh was a reporter for several news organizations, most worth bragging about being United Press International (UPI).

Like Beth over at Professional Blogger in 30 Days, there's a lot of people realizing that not only can blogging be fun, but it can be a life changing, professional career.

As I wrote in my book, Clear Blogging, if you have the passion for one or more subjects, the tools (mostly free) are there to create a money-making blogging business. There's lots more to say about how to do this, but there's just three points I'd like to make right now;

  • Passion breeds creativity, creativity breeds pageviews, pageviews make revenue. Blogging is hard work folks - you need to not just have the mindset of "I want to be a blogger and make lots of money", but the mindset of "I really, really, really care about X and I want to write about it, influence it, dig out interesting knowledge about it every workday for the next year".
  • X can be very, very, small. There's no such thing as a niche too small on the Internet today.
  • Push the envelope. The Internet in general and the Blogosphere in particular rewards innovation with attention, lots of attention. Sometimes that innovation is gimmicky, sometimes it's cool, sometimes it changes the whole warp and weave of the Internet. Go for it!

The people over at Mashable.com must have been drinking coffee by the bucketload lately - yesterday they posted two great, comprehensive lists of resources for bloggers.

The first - Blogging Toolbox: 120+ Resources for Bloggers - is almost too much of a good thing. If there's a resource you think you need as a blogger and it's not on this list, you don't need it.

The second - 23 Best Social Networking Toolbars and Plugins for Firefox - will give lots of new shiny toys for your Firefox, and an excellent overview of the best known social networks out there.

Just a quick note: if you're looking for info on starting your own micro-ISV (self funded software startup), there's several other additional sources of great information besides this book:
  • MyMicroISV.com is my ongoing site about all things micro-ISV. Besides my posts, I'm fortunate to have a range of guest authors posting there on a regular basis.
  • The Micro-ISV Show is a podcast on Microsoft's Channel 9. I recently joined the creator of the show, Michael Lehman, as co-host. Each week, we go find someone who has information you need as a micro-ISV, and interview them. In the last few weeks we've interviewed Don Dodge on exactly why Microsoft might want to buy your micro-ISV, Dave Collins of the secrets of Google AdWords and Joel Spolsky of Joel on Software fame on micro-ISVs, is the desktop dead and more.
  • Speaking of Joel, one of the best ongoing sources of info is the Joel On Software forum, The Business of Software. There you'll find great information, low noise, and a community of like minded micro-ISVs. Eric Sink, founder of SourceGear and a author with a great book for software companies of all sizes (
