Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
The plot outlined in this lurid exposé is a frightening one: Osama bin Laden has nuclear weapons—lots of them—and is preparing to use them to create "an American Hiroshima." Williams, a journalist, former FBI consultant and author of The Vatican Exposed: Money, Murder and the Mafia, contends that bin Laden has purchased of dozens low-yield Russian "suitcase" atomic bombs and gotten his hands on enough weapons-grade uranium to build Hiroshima-sized 10-kiloton devices, and that one nuclear device may already have been smuggled into America. Contrary to the subtitle, Williams relies heavily on media reports to flesh out the arch-terrorist’s nuclear intrigues, detailing bin Laden’s lucrative heroin trafficking operations, his ties to the Chechen mafia and to Pakistani nuclear scientists, and his network of thousands of sleeper agents in the United States. He criticizes the Clinton and Bush administrations for inept attempts to apprehend bin Laden, but offers little advice on what to do. As if to heighten readers’ anxiety, Clark reprints several al-Qaeda manifestoes calling down destruction on America and includes a lengthy treatise on the devastation an atom bomb would wreak on lower Manhattan. He doesn’t tie up all the loose ends in this hasty treatment; on the question of why, if it has nukes, al-Qaeda hasn’t yet used them, he can only assume that bin Laden is patiently awaiting the perfect moment for a multiple-target strike. But after 9/11, alarmist scenarios have to be taken seriously, and the disquieting evidence Clark has amassed provides a useful reminder of the gravest threat in the war on terror. Photos

4.0 out of 5 stars Loose nukes?, June 22, 2004
Mr. Williams fills an important void here with his book exploring the implications of tactical nuclear proliferation today. There are few books that deal with this subject (perhaps because of the murky nature of the nuclear smuggling world) and fewer still that are up-to-date. Yet the likelihood of a tactical strike in America by Islamic radicals has never seemed stronger. Certainly this important if terrifying topic deserves awareness and careful attention from policymakers and the general public alike. This is not to say his work is without substantial flaws, however.

Mr. Williams does provide sources for many of the eye-opening assertions in this book, but more than a few of them are of dubious credibility. The role of Bin Laden in international heroin smuggling, for example, is treated with a tone of bedrock certainty, when much about this connection remains controversial. As another example, of what value are the claims of various Russian mobsters he talks to? Hard to say. Mr. Williams also falls into the trap of regarding Al Qaeda as a single, monolithic block controlled from the top by Bin Laden and others. In reality, the lines of control seem to be much looser: "Al Qaeda" may be more of a "franchisable" process than a true organization, as one radical Islamist put it, with Bin Laden as a figure of inspiration rather than a tactical leader in firm control.

Yet despite these and other shortcomings (such as occasional lapses into painfully melodramatic prose), I consider it a book worth reading. There is certainly credible evidence that Soviet-era tactical nuclear arms are missing, as admitted by top-level Russian authorities such as Alexander Lebed. And let there be no doubt that there exist many who would use such weapons to damage America. This book should be taken with a grain of salt, but hopefully it will incite debate and raise awareness about this pressing issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars What does the future hold., July 16, 2004
By A. Dandrea "dcpanther" (Takoma Park, MD United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Mr. Williams does a pretty good job of presenting some al-Qaeda facts that the general public might not be aware of. His chapter on their involvement with the drug trade (and the amount of money that bin Laden reaps from it) was good. Even better is the chapter about the important role that A.Q. Khan and his associates/cronies (including the ISI and even Musharraf for that matter) play in the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The book tends to border a bit on hysteria when it comes to discussing what the next attack might in fact be like. But, at least Williams is honestly assessing one possible future. One thing that scares me about the American public is that many people seem to think that 9/11 won't happen again. Hopefully it won't, but we should all be aware that al-Qaeda WILL try something. One of the important things that Williams stresses is how PATIENT al-Qaeda and bin Laden in particular are. If it takes them 10 years to pull of a nuclear attack then they will wait 10 years. I'm not sure that they will be able to pull that off, but I do believe that they are trying. Hopefully we will have the intelligence to help prevent it. Overall, a pretty decent and quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wake Up America, July 6, 2004
By Mike J. Hayek (California) - See all my reviews
Paul L. Williams does an excellent job and putting the current War On Terrorism into perspective. Osama's Revenge gives the reader a clear understanding of the threat we face. Mr. Willaims outlines the "Networking" and organization of Terrorists groups over the last few decades. If you think it's only about Al Qaeda, then your sadly mistaken. It's a war of perverse will that encompasses thousands of militants and and criminals that have the same goals... The destruction of Israel, the destruction of the United States (The Great Satan) and the implentation of a world Caliph (Islamic Leader who rules by the Sharia ~ Islamic Law ). Osama Bin Laden in considered a Hero amoungst many Muslim communities across the globe. This book portrays a dark reality that few Americans comprehend.

While we sit in our comfortable homes watching the political parties debate the economy and who has the biggest ego, thousands if not millions of "Extremist" are plotting our demise! Something Michael Moore doesn't have to intellect to confront!

It's time for us to wake up and deal with the 'Real Threat'. Nuclear proliferation amoungst countries and/or groups that believe that killing infidels is a Holy Duty (Jihad) and a quick ticket to paradise.

It's a must read!
