Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The 20 stories in this solid collection from five-time Hugo-winner Resnick (Dragon America) run the gamut from silly fantasy and far-out detective romps to alternate history and straight-up science fiction. The best entry is the moving novella "For I Have Touched the Sky," part of Resnick's lauded Kirinyaga series. African village leader Koriba faces down a girl who doesn't wish to accept her place in her rigidly sex-stratified society, leading her to commit a divesting action that greatly affects Koriba, though he doesn't change his ways. Similarly, in "Robots Don't Cry," "Travels with My Cats," "A Princess of Earth" and "Down Memory Lane," the narrators can't move on with their lives, preferring to exist in hopes of a reunion with the dead or the demented. In the bizarre "The Elephants on Neptune," elephants, who never forget, become men, and vice versa, re-establishing the status quo. These glossy cross-genre stories, which tend not to plumb much emotional depth, showcase Resnick's predilection for dealing with the tragically static nature of the human condition. (June)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, underrated writer, December 10, 2006
Resnick is a great writer. At his best, he rivals Asimov and Bradbury. Even when he's not at his best, he's a solid, thoughtful artist. But anyone interested in Africa, women's rights, technology, should read his Kirinyaga stories. And Elephants on Neptune presages, and updates, Gaiman, Gibson, and all the other G's. Really a wonderful treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A particularly notable feature of a diverse, satisfying collection demonstrating Resnick's prowess., January 4, 2007
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Mike Resnick's NEW DREAMS FOR OLD is a diverse short story collection which challenges the notion that science fiction collections can be dry and predictable. Here are funny stories juxtaposed with hard science, novellas that have previously been available only to members of the Science Fiction Book Club, and ten Hugo nominees. The author's introduction to each story which describes its inspirational foundations makes for a particularly notable feature of a diverse, satisfying collection demonstrating Resnick's prowess.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of our Greatest, May 24, 2007
"New Dreams for Old" is a delightful joy to read. Mike Resnick is truely one of our greatest living writers. Certainly on par with Bradbury, Asimov and even Mark Twain. He writes with deceptive ease and clairity in a truely orginal and American voice. This is an awesome collection and I hope Pyr collects more of his short works.
