Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Sometimes a small book can tell a big story. Did you ever wonder where the banana came from or how it got its name? Are you aware that the first people to cultivate potatoes were not the Irish? Do you see what you have missed by not knowing the answers to these and other searing questions? Whether you do or not, the answers are here, well-researched and presented on a humorous platter of anecdotal material about your favorite foods and drinks. Learn about the tomato and why it was originally thought to be poisonous and understand why some bottled water may be hazardous to your health. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, it is sometimes said, but in the case of A Taste of Funny, it can only make you look at the culinary cosmos with a new and more discerning eye.

About the Author
Starting some twenty years ago as a short story writer of horror and ghostly fiction, Ms Dorfman has branched out into the worlds of journalism and humor. She publishes regularly in the Bristol Pilot and The Bucks County Herald and also maintains seven web sites offering well-researched articles on a wide variety of subjects ranging from general humor, food, drink and pop culture to the challenges of aging, maintaining a household and being a non-mechanical soul in a technological society. Her newest site, What's New, Emu?, expresses, in its own unique way, her love of all animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rodney Dangerfield meets Joan Rivers, March 11, 2005
A Taste of Funny had me chuckling so much in bed that I could hardly go to sleep. If Rodney Dangerfield (RIP) merged with Joan Rivers, a book like this would be the result. Dorfman weaves wisecracks (about vokda: "Hey,Mac, this spud's for you!) with knowledge (potatoes came from Peru, not Ireland--4,500 years ago) in a most entertaining fashion. A fun read; and a good gift, on its own or slipped into a gormet basket. Would make a great hostess gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars tasty and funny indeed, February 3, 2005
A Taste of Funny is a very enjoyable and fast read that would appeal to "foodies and non-foodies" alike. Not only did I find Ms. Dorfman to have a delightful sense of humor, the book is also filled with interesting and obscure facts regarding various foods. We learn about the "caveat emptor" (buyer beware) when purchasing bottled water. We learn how to avoid crying tears while peeling onions. I laughed out loud while reading the article about the giant lobster.

The conclusion page notes that the articles are meant to amuse and distract from the stress of everyday life. Ms. Dorfman clearly accomplished her goal.

Buy the book...you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute!, March 31, 2005
By Tiffany (Burlingame, CA) - See all my reviews
A Taste of Funny is a fantastic book to breeze through. It's divided into snip-its that are concise, entertaining, and educational. My favorite was the chapter on low-fat substitutes, which goes through the trials and tribulations of trying to decipher nutrition labels. This book would make a delightful hostess gift, stocking stuffer, or party favor for anyone who finds delight in food.
