5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing the Peaches, March 14, 2009

Seeing the Peaches

Amos Lassen

Recently Alyson Books began a series of guides for the gay traveler and in the various books they highlight what to do and see in each place. The newest addition to the series is Atlanta and it gives us what we need to know about the city culturally and historically so that our visit there can be the vest possible experience.
Atlanta is the second most highly populated city in terms of the GLBT community and there is an active gay life all year round. We start off by getting a brief history of the city and then chapter two gives us the information we need for the gay traveler including events that should mot be missed, where to stay, what kind of clothes to bring and information about the weather, We take a guided tour of the neighborhoods of Atlanta and go on to the attractions of the city. A complete restaurant and hotel guide follows which includes gay-friendly W hotels and bed and breakfasts. Of course, we may want to work out in Atlanta so we also have details about the gyms, spas and salons.
Every gay traveler wants to know about the nightlife and the authors give us all we want to know with information about the bar scene and which bars cater to certain tastes from Atlanta Eagle (leather) to Blake's (neighborhood) to Swinging Richards (nude male strippers) to Le Buzz (drag).
Other chapters are devoted to shopping, theaters and outings. The last chapters deal with the resources available to the gay traveler and we have listings on religious services, medical resources, librairies, parks and so on. A helpful bibliography closes the book.
Authors McAuley and Burkhalter both grew up in Atlanta and know what they are talking about. Let them help to make your next visit to Atlanta the gayest ever.
