In Pendergrass' third cozy romantic mystery set in Hope Point, the protagonist is Serena Davis, the sister of Destiny Millbrook, who was featured in the first two books. Serena's former fiance, Jesse Banos, has disappeared with a leggy former model, and someone wants to find him desperately--so much so that Serena and her 12-year-old daughter, Sarah, are threatened. With the sheriff off on his honeymoon with Serena's sister, endearingly klutzy deputy Kermit Riggs steps up to protect Serena, who cannot believe the clumsy yet studly young cop could be romantically attracted to her. A shoot-out with the bad guys and a daring getaway through river rapids lead to a sweetly romantic finale. While the protagonists are delightful, the secondary characters never become real. Jesse is particularly unfathomable, and why Serena ever wasted two years on him is perhaps the biggest mystery in the story. This a comfortable read, but discontinuity keeps it from rising to the level of the two earlier books. Diana Tixier Herald
