Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of gentler fantasy will welcome Arenson's novel. In a land divided among four people, each with their own magic-Stonesons, who control stone; Esiren, who share thoughts; Helands, who have the power of healing; and Forestfolk, who emulate beasts-the servant girl Aeolia discovers she's the Esiren Firechild, who embodies Esiren magic and alone can harm the Stoneson ruler, Sinther. Some not terribly realistic battle scenes may be too bloody for younger readers, but those who enjoy such traditional fantasy devices as love at first sight and princes raised as commoners will be rewarded.

From Booklist
When six-year-old Aeolia was sold into slavery to an ogre, her brother vowed he would find and free her some day, and she promised to never use her unique talent for making others feel exactly what she felt. Ten years later, men from the kingdom of Stonemark search her out because she is the only one who can hurt their king, who has become stone so that no physical weapon can harm him. Their arrival gives Aeolia the opportunity to flee the ogre and launches her on a quest that will bring friendships with the Firechild of the healing Helands and the shape-shifting Forestlands Firechild while she strives to free the Esirian refugees and liberate all Firefly Island from evil King Sinther's despotic rule. The violent and gory world Arenson has created is filled with interesting details and cultures; although the characters never quite come alive, he is an author to watch. Tixier Herald, Diana

5.0 out of 5 stars Firefly Island by Daniel Arenson, August 24, 2007
Daniel Arenson writes a fantastic tale of horror, friendship, love, and triumph intertwined in the lives of the four fire children struggling with the burden of their destiny. The unpredictable twists and turns of Firefly Island left me eagerly turning the page to learn the fate of characters I came to adore. Most admirable, is the way the author moves through feelings of utter desolation to exuberant triumph; highlighting both the injurious and encouraging aspects of human nature. I would recommend this book to fantasy and non-fantasy readers alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and enthralling story, August 16, 2007
Firefly Island
Daniel Arenson
Five Star, August 2007, $25.95, 347 pp.
ISBN: 9781594146015

In Stonefort, King Sinther lives underground where he is using his magic to turn his skin to stone so knives and arrows can't harm him. Also living in Stonefort is six year old Aeolia, dearly loved by her eleven year old brother Joren. Both are horrified when their drunken father sells her to an ogre as a slave; she is taken to his home in the Beastlands. A decade passes and she is still a slave when Prince Lale of Stonefort comes to her because she is the Firechild who can not only link minds with someone but also link senses.

Sinther fears her which is why his son wants her dead because she is the only one who can kill his father. She escapes and meets Talin, who has a killing grudge against Lale but agrees to accompany her. She escapes to the Forestfolk where they meet Taya also a Firefly but can change into any shape she wishes. She and a group of warrior shifters agree to help them catch Lale but a cruel betrayal causes them to be captured. Aeolia and Talin escape and after much travel and adventuring learn the truth about her; she must fulfill her role if there is to be peace to the island and its fire kingdoms.

Readers who like a sword and sorcery fantasy will find FIREFLY ISLAND a fascinating and enthralling story. Several characters' stories run concurrently and the audience will understand what motivates all of them and yet it is easy to follow. Aeolia is the catalyst who makes thinks happen and others react to her and her power. Compared to her Talin is a gentle soul, who loves his `Lia' and follows her wherever she must go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended, November 27, 2007
On Firefly Island, the peoples of the four nations possess four unique magical abilities. Each hundred years, one child from each nation is born whose abilities surpass all others. Each hundred years, the fireflies shine with the magic embodied in the life of each wondrous firechild - orange for the power to shape-change into a creature of the forest, red for the power to heal the body, white for the power to mold stone, and gold for the power to link to the mind. Each hundred years, during the lifetime of each firechild, the peoples of Firefly Island enjoy an anointed time of blessing because the nations and magics are in balance and harmony.

But when one firechild becomes a king, he desires to rule all things. The land is thrown into chaos, death, and destruction. Resistance means death. No one can oppose him. No one, that is, except another firechild, and then, only after great sacrifice and suffering.

Mr. Arenson has a sparkling gift for words that make his scenes come alive.

"The tall, brooding cottage sat at the end of the path like a neglected tombstone. Its unpainted walls were decaying, and its roof lacked half its tiles. The chimney looked ready to collapse. Beanstalks climbed the walls and ruptured the windows, like a great, green fist clutching the house. As the ogre aged and his sight dimmed he cared less about such matters, and railed about the broken shutters only if his joints ached that day. Secretly, Aeolia suspected he liked his house rotting and old, for he himself was so."

His characters shine with unique voices, no small achievement in a book that balances the lives of four main characters from four nations (as well as several minor characters) - all acting out their stories amidst battles, betrayal, redemption, and sacrifice.

Although the conflicts were bloodier than I usually care for and the main characters defeated hardened warriors in early battles too easily for my taste, the story swept me along. I liked the characters, and I wanted to know what happened to them - the proof of a good story.
