While the men rest in the afternoon, the women assemble in the living room for tea. While they drink, they vent and gossip, share intimate secrets, laughter and tears. Little by little, each confesses pivotal life experiences that have left an indelible impression on their hearts and minds: arranged marriages, acts of infidelity that altered their future lives, and most importantly, the cultural imperative to remain a virgin until marriage, a requirement that, in modern times, is not always possible or desirable. Based on her grandmother’s stories, Satrapi’s Bordados is a sharp assault on stereotypes about Middle Eastern women and on the culture that oppresses them, as well as a hilarious and heart-wrenching testament to these women’s day-to-day survival.
