Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Get ready to laugh out loud on a distinctly "otherworldly" adventure! In the Pflatlands, little is as it seems, as one might expect on a planet made by two drunken gods and bearing a distinct resemblance to a burrito. When one of the Pflatlands natives, a young Kar, French kisses a pretty human female-a female who just killed a beast that, for fun, knocks down mile-wide trees with its head-one might assume the young Kar is in love, or suicidal, or suffering delusions associated with a bad case of "ground sickness." Actually, it's just the way a Kar says "Thank you very much." However, from that moment on, Dahn is no ordinary Kar. And Sarah has never been an ordinary human female-grouchy, abrasive, and downright violent, yes-but ordinary? Never. She's also hiding a secret as big as the High Kingdom. When these two run afoul of the Assassins' Guild, it takes all their combined skills, a few magic artifacts, the help of a thimble-sized fairy, a beautiful wood-nymph, and The World's Most Dangerous MonkT to stay one jump ahead the deadliest killers in the Pflat-lands. Their only hope of escape is to decipher the coded scroll they've in-tercepted from Assassins' Guild-if they can stay alive long enough to do it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Fun, September 10, 2006
It is not often that one finds a book in fantasy/science-fiction that is truly funny. I do not mean satire with its usual component of thinly veiled cruelty. This is a good, well-written story told with humor. For a tale that will hold you and keep a broad smile on your face, buy and read THE PFLATLANDS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fought family members for it!, October 23, 2006

I reluctantly put the book down to do something mundane, only to find someone else in my family had picked it up, and wouldn't put it down! We spent a couple of days sniping the book from each other, not wanting to miss a page.

A great and funny tale without being forced. Honestly good natured and real, right down to the fantastic dialogue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Splendid!, October 9, 2006
By Kyle R. Schlichter (Somewhere, out there.) - See all my reviews

Finally finishing the long and difficult journey from its creator's brain to hardbound publication, R.D. Hammond's first published novel does not disappoint. The narrative is smartly constructed, complex but still following a natural flow, despite a few pop culture references seeming out of place. The dialog is witty and the characters, for all their quirks and absurdities, feel real and solid. Though clearly influenced by the likes of Adams, Pratchett, and Foglio, Hammond creates his own style rather than simply attempting to ape an established writer, and the result is a genuinely funny, witty, fantastic ride. I devoured this book in just over a weekend, and am chomping on the bit for more.
