About the Author

William Gaines' father, Max Gaines invented the comic book in 1933. Seventeen years later, William Gaines re-invented the comic book and went on to become the larger than life publisher of one of the most successful magazines in history: MAD, originally edited by Harvey Kurtzman. In 1960, Gaines sold MAD to Premier Publications, but stayed on as publisher. William Gaines died June 3 1992. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

If you can remember when this material was new, hip, and cutting-edge, well.... you are getting old, man- real old. The pieces in this collection are from the 1956 and 1957. This is back before the "usual gang of idiots" was known as the "usual gang of idiots"- they were merely idiots. I mean the hot topic here was "beatniks", so you know that you are dealing with "classic" stuff. And you really are, reading this paperback of classic MAD Magazine material from the 50's is like breaking open a time capsule- especially if you remember those days.

This book represents the early CLASSIC period of MAD circa late '50's. Wallace Wood does most of the contributions with "Foreign Movies", "Sin Doll-ella" & "The Potrzebie System of Weights & Measures". Joe Orlando makes some significant contributions with Bob Clarke, along with some early Dave Berg. George Woodbridge, Don Martin, Jack Davis have also arrived. Very solid! Very hip! Very funny! The book is very durable & should last many years without wear. I'm very glad they reissue these paperbacks as it takes me to my youth. MAD really needs to reissue ALL of their paperbacks. They are so damn classic, we must save them from exinction. So MAD fans unite and buy any old MAD paperback you can find on Amazon or elsewhere. They are relatively cheap and are usually in good condition. MAD, we need your dedication to this hallowed task!! We DEMAND it!!
