3.0 out of 5 stars Not a lot new, January 15, 2009
By Donald F. Freeman "donaldff" (Morris Plains, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Had the 1997 version, and I have to say not much has changed. It's not that the information isn't useful, but I don't understand the point of writing a "new" version every year. That's the main reason I gave it only three stars. Plus, there are things the author suggests that just aren't realistic. The worst example is where he talks about asking for another interview when you've already had one and been rejected. I'd really like to know how many people that's worked for. To suggest that something like that is realistically going to work is very misleading.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the perspective of a job and career transition coach, March 13, 2009
There are many books to chose from on the topic of how to mount a successful job search campaign. In my estimation, this book, along with "Parachute" are two of the best among the many availabe. Each edition offers practical, well-organized and useful approaches in securing interviews and landing a position in this particularly difficult job market. I can say with confidence that if you are looking for a starting place, you could do much worse than selecting this edition to jumpstart your search. Good luck and "Always Be Careering"!

5.0 out of 5 stars The first book I recommend for job hunting!, May 27, 2009
By Stephen Amos "Problem Solver" (Aliso Viejo, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
`Knock `Em Dead' is one of the best books on job hunting ever. Did not understand job interviews until I read this book. I pull out the book and reread it every time I am going to prepare for an interview. It is that valuable for job hunting, because it is a how to book telling you how to prepare to succeed.

Have recommended `Knock `Em Dead' for years to people in transition, and bought several copies to give away. Literally it is the first book I recommend to job hunters if they know what job they want.

I recommend `What Color is Your Parachute' because of the exercises to know yourself. It is much better to know where you want to live, how much you need to make, and what your priorities are before you find just any job. Instead find a job that fits you well and you can thrive. It also reminds you there are games played by people in the process, and not to take those personally.
What Color Is Your Parachute? 2009: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers

If you are considering or in a transition, I recommend `Adapt! How to Survive and Thrive in the Changing World of Work'. It is a collection of career stories, how to's, and advanced techniques for finding good careers. The advantage of Adapt! is you get more than one person's viewpoint as it was written by 13 successful business owners, coaches, and professionals with real world experience in different industries. You will learn something that will give you an advantage in job hunting or starting a new career. I am a co-author, but I read the book to learn. My co-authors have a lot of experience and we want to give back to you.
Adapt! How to Survive and Thrive in the Changing World of Work

Remember, the most critical thing is your attitude. All three books recommended here will teach you, but your attitude controls how successful you will be through a transition. Good luck and God bless.
Steve
