Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this unusual novel, Locke, a writer for NBC's Tonight Show, takes readers on a surreal journey involving a magic carpetbag, with mixed results. David Connors is a Chicago video games art director who has let alcohol and an inability to get in touch with his feelings separate him from his wife and two young children. The Christmas season only exacerbates these feelings, and he throws himself out of his 39th-floor office window. When his life is spared, a magic carpetbag he's discovered provides endless objects that hold clues to his past. Together with an unhappy single woman he meets at a restaurant (a relationship that never quite makes sense), he boards a train and begins a strange trip to a bizarre yet familiar town. References to the need for reconciliation with God are inserted in a few places as pieces of David's past come together. In the climax, David experiences a recreation of an incident that has haunted him as an adult. The story requires maximum suspension of disbelief, as David finds forgiveness, explains his story to his wife, then faces his fears again in the closing pages. Faith fiction readers who enjoy a magical element to their stories should find this to their taste. (Sept.)

Review

THE RELUCTANT JOURNEY OF DAVID CONNERS is a wonderfully compelling inspirational novel that gives new meaning to the term "emotional baggage". I found this to be a clever, original story and eagerly turned pages to find out what would be revealed next. The characters are vivid, well developed and easy to identify with. Author Don Locke has written a beautiful, emotional and inspiring tale of faith and forgiveness. -- Romance Junkies

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Story of Love and Forgiveness , December 12, 2007
David Connors kows he hasn't been much of a husband and father. He also knows it's his fault. He just can't be close to anyone, even his wife and children. He's standing on the ledge of the building where he works, ready to end it all, when he sees an old carpetbag, half covered in the snow. The bag seems to draw him. It has a lock and a key, but apears to be empty. But there's a funny thing about the bag--sometimes it's empty, and other times it holds exactly what the person confronting David needs. Most important of all, it seems to be leading him to an understnding of his past, whether he wants to go along or not.

The Reluctant Journy is a heart grabbing ride thorough one man's life, that left me feeling as if I were making a journey of my own. A powerful, thought provoking story of love and forgiveness. Strongly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Curl up and Enjoy this book!, October 25, 2007

Don Locke's ability to share his characters' deep emotions in a way in which I could relate was brave and encouraging at the same time. The story is comical, exciting, and keeps you turning pages. A delight to read, and a lot to ponder. The appendices are an added, enjoyable bonus

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, September 27, 2007
Magical, mysterious, and romantic describe the reluctant trip down memory lane for David Connors. Don Locke has spun a sensitive and very humorous tale with adventure and querky characters thrown in for good measure. A great read. You'll laugh outloud!
