Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This book is about mares, but it's about women, too. It's about the essence of being female. Dealing with a mare can be frustrating, and the author has compiled 50 stories with help and inspiration. Learn about Territorial Mares from Julie Goodnight and Gender Training from Dr. Ron Meredith.and share the experiences of 36 other mare owners. Take a delightful look at the special qualities of mares who have touched their owners' hearts! Glimpse treasured moments between horse and human as they learn together and from each other, sharing the struggle and joy of building trust, respect, good communication and mutual dependence. Realize the profound love that can exist between two separate beings. From joy of birth to anguish of loss, there is a source of inspiration, love and healing in soulful eyes and hooves that fly! Betsy Kelleher's first riding horse was a Percheron mare from her grandfather's work team on an Iowa farm. Her second mare started out as a son's 4-H project and resulted in Betsy's first book, "Sometimes a Woman Needs a Horse!" Betsy has owned seven mares and eight geldings over 30 years. She and her husband now own two gaited mares and two geldings and enjoy trail riding. Betsy has shown "Walker's Velvet Queen" in local gaited classes. Since December of 1995, she has written a monthly column for the Illinois Horse Network newspaper. Under the heading, Sometimes God Uses Horses, each column deals with a horse-related issue and a spiritual application. Her website, www.goduseshorses.com, shares her columns, horse photos and information about her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW.. touching stories , April 16, 2008
After reading this book about mares and how they are alfa, and how some of these mares have touched women and childrens lives it was tear jerking. I would recommend this book for anyone that has a Mare to understand a bit more of what they are like and how they can touch your lives. Looking forward to reading another book from betsy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Notes from the compiler!, February 6, 2008
I just happen to be the one who compiled the fifty stories for this book. Don't see any description of the book yet, so I'll add something on that. This is a collection of articles and stories by 39 horse owners. Julie Goodnight contributed an excellent answer for anyone with a Territorial Mares problem. Dr. Ron Meredith offers a delightful piece on "Gender Training for Mares." Then there are stories about mares who have touched their owners' lives in a special way. You will glimpse treasured moments between horse and human as they learn together and from each other, sharing the struggle and joy of building trust, respect, good communication and mutual dependence. Each story has biographical information on the writer, and a photo. Some stories definitely show the female connection between woman and mare! I am thankful to and proud of the many mare owners who contributed to this project!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book, March 28, 2009
By Horse Lover 22 (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
I really enjoyed this book. I have never owned a mare, but heard all the "mare" stories. This book made me appreciate the wonderful connection these horses can have with their owners, especially if the are female. I often go back and reread some of the stories, because they are very enlightening and entertaining, and helpful to me as a returning horse owner.
