Most noted British artists of the 20th century have at some time contributed illustrations for a book. However, such artists make up just a few of the 1000 entries in this dictionary, the result of ten years of research by book collector Horne. Each biographical sketch covers the artist's education (i.e., art school), career, influences, books illustrated, and exhibitions held, together with a brief bibliography. Spectacular illustrations (601 in all, with 157 in color) are included throughout, making this work a visual feast for the reader. The publisher has a reputation for useful as well as beautiful books, and its latest offering is no exception, serving as a sturdy companion to their Dictionary of 19th Century British Book Illustrators (1994). Highly recommended for most reference, book history, or design collections; the latter might also consider a circulating copy.
