Editorial Reviews

Product Description

William Secord is the first author to explore the presentation of the dog, from its origins in Greek, Roman and later European art, to the remarkable paintings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries up to modern times. In this splendid work he traces the evolution of some fifty breeds, using carefully selected illustrations by outstanding nineteenth and twentieth century artists, ranging from depictions of hounds and sporting dogs in the field to Victorian portraits of pampered pets and highly-bred favourites. From the diminutive chihuahua to the massive St Bernard, this fascinating account of most of the popular breeds provides an original and penetrating artistic record of mankind's faithful companions. It is also an invaluable reference work about the many superb painters who specialised in dog painting, providing an essential index for art historians, dealers and galleries requiring a directory of names and examples of the exponents of this popular genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but could have been so much better...., January 14, 2005

I bought this book sight unseen expecting a treasure trove of dog art. While it does contain plenty of art I was very dissapointed in that a huge portion of the prints are in black and white. I don't know of too many artists that paint in only black and white and grays. I would have given this book a far higher rating if the prints would have been in color and larger. You have to give it to the author for the scope of the collection within the covers, but I'm an Irish Wolfhound fan and there were NO paintings of wolfhounds in the book other than a few paintings that had a wolfhound in them with several other breeds (none were indexed). If you're a dog fan, buy the book "Mondo Canine"- you won't be dissappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A work of art, January 23, 2006
This is a beautiful volume that goes far beyond any coffee table book. Not only is it a treasure trove of canine art, but the research surrounding the breeds and artists is extensive. I recommend it without reservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dog Painting 1840-1940, January 6, 2009

I purchase this book for my mother for Christmas but I had a hard time wrapping it because I couldn't put it down. By Far this was the most interesting dog painting book I have ever seen. My mother called me a couple days after I gave it to her and she just loves it. She tells me that she has not put it down since she got home. If you love dogs and art work this is a must purchase book.
