Product Description

The names Bullmastiff, Bull and Mastiff, Bandog, Tiedog, and Gamekeeper's Night Dog have created an identity confusion of the breed known today as the Bullmastiff. It is one of the few dogs that was not adopted by Royalty and hence has not enjoyed the promotional publicity enjoyed by such breeds.

Owing to this, its origins, purposes and history have become a little obscure over time and lost in the annals of history. In the 1930's, breed historians such as Eric Makins and Arthur Craven did their best to axquaint the public with the breed of that time.

This book provides background, methods and a 'how-to' for novices and first-time owners, plus a host of information for the long-time fancier, in a comprehensive format to supplement the true fancier's library.

From the Back Cover

Bred for strength and as an ally of the gamekeeper in his war against poachers, fiercely loyal to its family yet with a loving and kind temperament, the Bullmastiff is truly a 'gentle giant'. As one of the largest and heaviest dogs in the world, naturally a fearless protector, the Bullmastiff needs to be understood, treated and trained properly. In return it will give its owner many years of loyalty, love, protection, warmth and affection.

Bill Walkey is especially qualified to write about this impressive dog. He has bred 36 champions under the Shayla prefix, has been Breeder of the Year four times and bred the only Bullmastiff to win both the Canadian and the American National Specialty Shows. This is also the only Canadian dog to with the ABA Specialty (National). Bill has judged in Britian, Denmark, Malta, the United States and Canada, and is one of the judges for the Specialty Show in Finland in 1999.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you buy only 1 book on the Bullmastiff it should be this, October 9, 1999
By A Customer
The Bullmastiff Manual by Bill Walkey is a 'must read - must buy' book. Bill Walkey is a breed specialist judge, with a proven track record as a knowledgeable and successful breeder and exhibitor. Shayla Bullmastiffs have produced many top show dogs including specialty 'In Show' winners in both the US and Canada. This book is one of the most comprehensive books available on the market. Its chapters include Introduction to the Breed, Origin & Development, How to Choose a Puppy, Maintenance & Grooming, Housing, Training, Breeding, Bullmastiff Breed Standards, The Problem Times, Famous Bullmastiffs in Britain, UK Champions, Some Important Pedigrees and even includes additional information such as Further Reading, a Comprehensive Glossary & Index, together with a wonderful collection of colour photographs and diagrams. As an owner and breeder of Bullmastiffs since 1972, I recommend that if you buy just one book on the Bullmastiff, Bill Walkey's 'The Bullmastiff Manual (2nd Edition) should be the one you choose.

5.0 out of 5 stars definatley a worth wile read, October 15, 2000

Bill clearly knows what he is talking about, out of all the bullmastiff books i own (i own them all) this is definetly my favorite. If you dont like pictures though, i wouldnt recomend this book as it is full of them. (as with all t.f.h books) I have heard some comments on there being to many pictures. But I for one am glad to see the bullies Bill has encountered and bred along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, June 6, 2002
By Kirsty J Clark (Oklahoma City, OK) - See all my reviews
This book is very informative and works for all levels. Reading this book has been very helpful with raising our own bullmastiffs, one of which we actually adopted from Bill. He is very knowledgeable and this book is very helpful in all aspects of raising a bullmastiff puppy. He provides a thorough explanation of lineage and the history of the bullmastiff.
