Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The enigma of consciousness has fascinated psychologists and philosophers alike. More recently it has been the turn of neuroscientists and physicists (such as Roger Penrose in his bestseller The Emperor's New Mind) to engage with the subject. The study of consciousness has tended to fall into two problems: the mind-body problem (how can a physical entity give rise to mental events) and the mind-mind problem (concerned with understanding the qualitative aspects of consciousness - the way coffee smells, the way red looks). They are generally regarded as two separate problems. Ming Singer is interested in the qualitative aspects of consciousness (known by the philosophical term qualia) In Unbounded Consciousness she puts forward an original and integrative theory of consciousness that argues for the inseparability of qualitative and non-qualitative aspects and for the restoration of the concept of psyche. Ming Singer's clear and comprehensive account will be of interest to students and academics in psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, physics, and to the general reader.

About the Author
Ming Singer is Associate Professor at Caterbury University, New Zealand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consciousness Unbound: A review, August 29, 2006
Though I rate the book highly, this is not to say that I agree with it in all particulars. It includes the best and most concise
survey of philosophical approaches to consciousness I have yet encountered, and was most helpful in clarifying my own thinking
on the subject.

I think that the present edition and most of the sources cited
therein skirt the issue of what consciousness actually is. We
have surveys of conscious-processes and speculative approaches
to them( and certainly I am nowhere near a non-tautological
definition of consciousness),but nothing suggesting what consciousness(qua: raw-awareness) actually is.

Because of the conciseness, I recommend this edition to anyone
who is interested in clarifying the notion of consciousness.
