Product Description

Economics has proved the most influential branch of social science in the 20th century. So what do the world's top economists have to say on what is widely perceived to be the most urgent threat to human existence: the destabilization of the environment? In this extraordinary book Carla Ravaioli talks to some of the world's most famous economists, representing a wide range of intellectual positions, on the connections between economic development and environmental disequilibrium. Her conversations - thematically arranged - are always compelling, sometimes illuminating, more often profoundly disturbing.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must read for both economists and environmentalists, December 1, 2005

(REAL NAME)
as an economics student, i've spent some time trying to extract the general attitude the economics communtiy had about deep environmental issues, not meer localized circumstances. i've felt somewhat alone in thinking that the economic systems and ecologic systems are directly related, not inversely so.

carla ravaioli has accomplished what i would like to have done myself in interviewing about 30 noted economists, some of them sporting nobel awards. she asks them all the questions i would like their answers to. the respondents' vary. some are comforting, others disturbing, all are revealing.

the book also has a section written by author paul ekins where he gives a crash course in environmental and resource economics.

as environmental issues are direct results of economic activity, it is essential to understand how the economists feel about the relation between the two, now and in the future.

i would highly recommend this book
