Product Description

At first, progress in shipbuilding gave sailors more freedom. Mathematics and compasses encouraged them to set out on longer trips for destinations farther and farther away. Yet, ocean travel remained mysterious and terribly dangerous. Sailors had to rely on their knowledge and on the lore and wisdom of their forefathers. They also relied on handmade maps, crudely, but beautifully drawn. The selection of maps in this handsome book date from the 12th to 18th century, including the largest Vatican collection, compiled in one book. These maps are fascinating historical documents and a testimony to the bravery of all those who set out, not really know where on this earth that they were going.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected maps, October 9, 2009
By Loretta Clark (Roswell, NM) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was well pleased with the information in "Historic Maritime Maps: 1290-1699." It was a picture of a reproduction of a globe from 1492 that impressed me the most. This was from the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris. Columbus might have had access to a globe. In addition to maps, the books contains a multitude of background information about people, places and history. Although the book contains an index on geographic location by year, it does not have a a subject index. Therefore, it limits the reader's ability to quick research. Even so, it is an interesting book for people who are interested in history from this time period.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pure pleasure for the mind and the eyes, July 31, 2002

This book is absolutely fascinating! The author has done a wonderful job in speaking of these ancient maps. Although I was not too interested in the subject, I quickly found myself devouring the book! It is a perfect gift for all, both for its iconography and the insight it gives on this remarkable page of our history...

1.0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment, February 24, 2002

I got suckered by this book. The typos are abominable; the text trite. Sure the maps are good, but most are the same classics you see in any history of maps book.
