A mysterious painting with the power to bring love and destruction to all who come into contact with it is the subject of this first novel by a Norwegian publishing executive. When a newly built Italian church collapses in 1989 and kills all the worshipers in attendance, including Vatican officials and the architect, a mild-mannered librarian begins to research the history of the destroyed altarpiece. He uncovers, in the process, the secrets surrounding the fourteenth-century painter, his model, and the village storyteller, who recorded the events surrounding the painting so that future generations might learn from past experience. The voices of the different characters tend to be indistinguishable from one another, leading to some confusion for all but the most vigilant reader; but generally this is a smoothly translated, enjoyable tale about the mysterious working of God and the dangerous power of art.
