Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Cochrane's sophisticated approach to the Venice-invented "poor man's art" incorporates decoupage and decorative painting. The author combines the craft's basic elements common to all visual arts--space, proportion, line, texture, and color--with the processes necessary to produce an illustrated item, from surface preparation to sanding and varnishing. What happens next is not a procession of patterns. Rather, she examines a few dozen different techniques, including sponging, stippling, and faux malachite, as projects. Although no pictures show the actual process, the numbered step-by-steps give readers general directions about how to achieve certain effects. Glossary, suggested reading, and suppliers appended. Product Description
Découpage itself can be a fine art, especially when you use as subject matter photos cut from magazines featuring paintings, sculptures, and other works by your favorite artists. A master of the craft will teach you the basic techniques for working with flat and curved surfaces, backgrounds, motifs, finishing seals and glues, as well as the styles of sponging, gilding, antiquing, and distressing, plus oriental finishes, marble illusions, stone finishes, tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, and fresco. Then you're ready to try the author's own favorite projects that feature the art of the old masters, including an oriental screen, antiqued box, powder bowl, jewelry case, vases, plaques, ostrich egg, and drop-table. Dozens of "Handy Hints" reveal the artist's secrets for creating special effects.
