5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide, November 8, 2009

I spent 2 weeks driving around Bulgaria in October 2009. I used this guide exclusively for accomodations and frequently for restaurants. I found it accurate and discerning. It led us to a number of unique and excellent hotels and with no losers. The restaurants it recommended were good choices. The description of the Bulgarian cities, travel sites, and history was good, helpful, and accurate. A good buy all around. Doug Van Vlear

1.0 out of 5 stars Orpheus, August 8, 2009
Ancient writers thus the myth states that Orpheus was born close to Olympus. The writer of the book doesn't know what he is writing about. The same for all other modern writers that write country or travel guides that claim Bulgaria is the land of Orpheus.Bulgaria is the Land of Bulgarians.Bulgaria used Orpheus to boost its tourism and ommits the myth everywhere it can.Turkey has more of ancient Thrace than any other country, does this make Orpheus a Turk?

Strabo,Geography Book 7,Chapter 7,"The city Dium, in the foot-hills of Olympus, is not on the shore of the Thermaean Gulf, but is at a distance of as much as seven stadia from it. And the city Dium has a village near by, Pimpleia, where Orpheus lived.

At the base of Olympus is a city Dium. And it has a village near by, Pimpleia. Here lived Orpheus, the Ciconian, it is said--a wizard who at first collected money from his music, together with his soothsaying and his celebration of the orgies connected with the mystic initiatory rites, but soon afterwards thought himself worthy of still greater things and procured for himself a throng of followers and power. Some, of course, received him willingly, but others, since they suspected a plot and violence, combined against him and killed him. And near here, also, is Leibethra. "
