Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This blend of travel adventure and personal history is often more entertaining than informative a la the other entries in the "Journeys" series. Canadian-born Stevenson (Kiwi Tracks) has lived across the globe, including outdoor enthusiasts' paradise, Norway, which he describes here. He exults in the magnificence of the country's fjords and mountains but is less enthusiastic about the weather (often rainy, even in summer) and the long winter nights. Unless one is familiar with Norwegian geography, the segments of his walk (with companion Annabel) from Oslo to Bergen may lack a sense of place. Further, although Stevenson frequently mentions taking photographs, they are, unfortunately, not included. There is, however, sufficient information about trekking in Norway to whet the appetite of those seeking a new travel destination. Recommended for larger public libraries with extensive travel collections. Janet Ross, formerly with Sparks Branch Lib., NV

Product Description

Endless summer days and vast wilderness: Norway is an outdoor paradise almost too good to be true. Andrew Stevenson's affectionate, luminous account reveals the magical appeal of this Scandinavian wonderland as he walks and cycles (and gets stuck in the off snowdrift) across the country from Oslo to Bergen. Staying on clifftop farms, climbing the country's highest mountains or taking a sidetrip for to the north of the Arctic circle, Andrew gets under Scandinavia's skin as only someone who has lived there can. As he introduces a land he loves to the new love in his life, he comes to peace with a country of light - a darkness.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent insights into Norway and dead easy to read, April 17, 2004
By A Customer
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this description of two people's journey across Norway. Having spent five years there, and speaking the language, Andrew provides easy insights into Norway, Norwegians and their way of life. As funny and insightful as it is, there's an added element, a bittersweet experience as he returns to a land, and a past love, which had bewitched him and charmed him. I felt like I was there and didn't want the story to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its true what you hear about Norwegians!, October 26, 2002
By Dina P. Anker (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
My husband is Norwegian (moved here from Oslo to marry me). We live in Toronto, ON, Canada!

He often shared stories and stories of how norwegians were and its so funny and entertaining to hear these exact stories in this book.

Its a quick read and you can visualize those beautiful fjords, mountains and off-the-beaten-track trecks you see NOrwegians On

I'd fully recommend it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read to escape, July 26, 2009
By Vickii M. Ellis (San Mateo, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an amazing book for anyone who has ever visited Norway and seen the little red farmhouses on the top of the sheer walls that line the fjords. Now imagine following a trail that leads from house to house. The story totally grabs your imagination as it describes an extended hike in one of the most beautiful places in the world. I was very glad to find this story and plan to read it again at some point.
