2.0 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning, September 1, 2003
By Deaf Writer "deafwriter" (Grand Rapids, MI United States) - See all my reviews
As a Deaf American Sign Language instructor, I am always on the look-out for good material. I obtained this book and videotape set when I was asked to teach a short, basic sign language course (not specifically ASL) in the community. It offers good and bad points....

Some of the good aspects of this set is that it comes equipped with many practice sentences that have the Pidgin Sign English and the American Sign Language translations. It offers some help on idioms and teaches some basic facts about deafness and the Deaf community.

The bad, however, include only stick figure drawing of signs, many of the practice sentences have words/signs the course hasn't covered yet, the information about deafness and the Culture is at times outdated, and the videotape is sorely amateur. I couldn't sit through twenty minutes of watching this woman stare off to the side for a go ahead and then turn back and sign something like, "Hello." It was kind of pathetic.

If you already have a curriculum or you are well-versed in ASL, this is an option for you. If you're trying to learn sign on your own or you're interested in the true language of American Sign Language, please look further. Not recommended for most. That's just this deafie's opinion. :o(
