"The single most comprehensive source of think tank listings, and the one upon which I depend most, is [the] Think Tank Directory." -- Andrew Rich, in Think Tanks, Public Policy, and the Politics of Expertise (referring to the first edition)

"The Directory will be of evident use to anyone working in any aspect of policy analysis." -- American Reference Books Annual (review of first edition)

"[T]he directory will quickly become the most widely used reference source on think tanks in America . . . . [A must for those] who seek to understand and influence how public policy is made in America." -- James G. McGann, author of Comparative Think Tanks, Politics and Public Policy, in a letter to the publisher (referring to the first edition)

Book Description

The second edition of the Think Tank Directory profiles more than 1,100 independent public policy think tanks, approximately 500 of which were not in the first edition published ten years earlier. This edition focuses solely on independent think tanks, as they are more elusive and harder to identify than centers associated with colleges and universities.

The typical entry for each think tank includes the organization's mission statement; website; chief executive officer; alternate and former names; board members; year established; research policy areas; titles of representative recent studies, books or reports; types of funding sources; methods of operation; number of staff members; approximate budget size; mailing address; telephone and fax numbers; and e-mail address. The directory also includes indexes for alternate names, budget categories, geographic locations, public policy research.

From the Author

Independent nonprofit public policy research organizations have a major impact on public policy in this country. The men and women who staff these think tanks are constantly quoted in the news media and their studies have tremendous influence on policy makers. Yet, most such groups are little known or understood. Many of these think tanks have broad public policy agendas. Others are much more narrowly focused, expressing a research interest in only two or three issue areas. Of the 68 public policy areas we asked about, the six most often identified areas of interest were economic policy, health policy, elementary and secondary education, environmental protection, international affairs and politics. Close to half of these think tanks indicated a general interest in economic policy. Most also identified more specific areas of interest having economic impact. What does the future hold? Think tanks will most likely continue to increase in number. In the last several decades, much of the growth has come from the creation of conservative and market oriented think tanks. While that my continue, it appears that progressive and liberal interests have begun to develop a number of think tanks, at least partly in response to the creation of conservative oriented groups. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
