Gr 5 Up--Kathleen Krull (Harcourt, 2000) continues her Lives of - series with this treatment of women in power: political leaders, government officials, and rebels. Starting with Cleopatra and ending with Rigoberta Menchu, winner of the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize, the program offers insight into the lives of 20 women. Most of the subjects are well-known, a few are obscure; some are admired, some are reviled. Each entry opens with pertinent facts briefly stated followed by the bulk of the mini biography. About five minutes is devoted to each subject, with longer treatment given to Elizabeth I and Eleanor Roosevelt. While far from complete biographies, great additional information for report writing is included with tantalizing tidbits that won't be easily found elsewhere. For instance, Isabella I bathed only twice in her entire life, and Cleopatra was married to her ten-year-old brother. The fact that this brother turned up drowned while another was poisoned is preceded by the understatement, "She was not a good big sister." The audio format may not lend itself to note taking for everyone, however. The interest and entertainment value of the compilation doesn't suffer, although illustrator Kathryn Hewitt's amusing portraits are missed. Narrator Melissa Hughes does a fine job, affecting an ever-so-slight accent on occasion.-Diana Dickerson, White Pigeon Community Schools, MI
