From Booklist
Labovitz introduced Zoe Kergulin, an intrepid West Virginia private investigator, in Ordinary Justice [BKL Ap 15 99]. Now she's back in a new whodunit, in which her beloved cousin, Sheriff Ethan McKenna, is ambushed while with his married deputy, Rosalyn, for no apparent reason. Lies and rumors are rampant in Bickle County, especially the allegation that the two are having an affair despite Ethan's preference for men. Perpetual liar Ren, a troubled teen with too much money and free time, may have been a witness, but authorities dismiss her account as just another invention. As Ethan lies hospitalized in a coma, Labovitz's story seems similarly out of commission, but it eventually picks up the pace in the second half. Sluggishness aside, readers will enjoy the wild West Virginia setting and the development of this relatively new detective series. Whitney Scott
