From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-Two serviceable biographies. Andres Galarraga tells the story of a Venezuelan who fulfilled his dream of playing major league baseball in the U.S. Boulais's simple text flows smoothly and is interesting to read. Mary Joe Fernandez focuses on the successes of the young tennis player. Turning pro at the age of 14, she defied the odds and remained in school. After juggling studies with tennis competitions, she graduated from high school and went on to win Olympic gold. Much of the narrative is little more than a list of her winnings and it becomes tedious. Each book is illustrated with a sketch and several black-and-white photographs of varying quality. Sidebars reiterate important sentences from the text. Neither book captures the joy and excitement of its sport.
