About the Author
The Choctaw Language Committee consisted of Curtiss Billy, Teresa Billy, Sue Folsom, Hettie Harris, Linda Higginbotham, Betty Jacob and Charley Jones. Charley Jones, elder and speaker, was born in 1917 in Honobia, Oklahoma. A full-blood, he grew up among his extended family of aunts and grandmothers after his mother died of influenza. He spoke only Choctaw until he was sent to Indian School and forced to learn English. On January 24, 1991, Charley was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the McCurtain County Historical Society for his work in preserving the Choctaw heritage and culture. He has also translated the Choctaw Constitution into English for the Smithsonian. His other tapes and books include and adult Introduction to Choctaw program, a Choctaw song book, and a language sampler.
