Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-Instructions for making a 6-inch minibear and a 16-inch hugging bear require such standard items as scissors, needle and thread, and paper for tracing patterns. Neither a sewing machine nor a sewing background is needed. The "Illustrated Stitch Dictionary & How-to Guide" (whipstitch, appliqu?, etc.) and index make the book user-friendly. The patterns are clearly drawn and easily traced. The instructions are not daunting, although children need the dexterity to handle scissors and needles. The little bear is flat; the larger bear is a tad more difficult to make as it is three-dimensional and requires greater effort and thought. And then the true fun begins-dressing the toys. The patterns for the articles of clothing are also no-sew or sew-easy. For young readers who love bears and who like crafts, this book is unbearably good. Indeed it does offer a "Quick Start."-Jennifer J. Gallant, formerly at Cleveland Public Library, OH

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a terrific book for making your first teddy bear!, June 13, 2002
By homeschooling mom of 4 (Central Florida) - See all my reviews
This book is recommended for ages 10 and up but as an adult I found it exciting and useful as well as a child would. There are step by step instructions on how to make a 16 inch teddy bear (which is rather large) in clear and concise instructions. The first part teaches you how to make a teddy bear much like a cookie cut out in just one piece. The second part details how to make a 16 inch teddy bear. The last part of the book illustrates how to make simple clothes to dress your bear.

There are informational boxes scattered throughout to explain the terms used like how to make a dart. I found the instructions to be readily understood and I successfully made my first teddy bear.

The only drawback is that the only color photo is on the cover of the book. The book only contains black and white line drawings inside. It would have been helpful to have had more photos to use as a guide.
