Editorial Reviews

Review
“[Teasley’s] characters are an exotic blend of the neurotic and the noirish—tense, hungry, dangerous folk of diverse ethnicities who crave understanding and stimulation.”—Village Voice
“Written in prose both blunt and elliptical, the dozen tales form a gritty, unflinching yet empathetic collage of lives on the precipice of contemporary America.”—Los Angeles Times
“A daring and original voice.”—San Francisco Chronicle

Product Description
This startlingly edgy, seductive debut collection of short stores, travels from New York to Northern California, Mexico, Los Angeles and Paris, dropping us dead centre into the lives of those whose extreme behaviour has led them to the threshold of significant transition. Among the many intriguing, unique individuals, there is Marty wrestling with sobriety and his unspeakable obsession; Gita trying to conduct the love triangle she orchestrated; the frustrated lover, Tim, attempting to wedge himself between his girlfriend and her brother; and the surf chick, Magda, tightrope-walking in her circus of drugs, opportunistic men and the waves of Baja California. Finely crafted and painstakingly written, each of these twelve stories is a stunningly powerful, dynamic look into lives at the breaking point.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional book., October 22, 2001
By Hooman Majd (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
Thank God (or whomever or whatever you thank) for the resurgence and acceptance of the short story as a commercially viable literary form. And thanks again for this collection, a wonderful polyphony of characters, places and stories that are both recognizable and utterly alien at the same time, mimicing the world we know, (or if we really think about it, we know). Teasley's style makes the characters ours, and her writing has a rich but brutally honest tone that is so delightful to escape to, particularly in this age of the utterly pretentious "debut novel". An exceptional book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wild ride!, November 5, 2001
By Daniel Baxter (Hollywood, CA United States) - See all my reviews
The stories in this collection are so gripping and intense, the characters are so disturbingly real. I loved watching the wildly edgy scenes play out like a film in my mind. This is a superb read that I highly recommend!!
