Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Polycystic Ovary Syndrom (PCOS), named after the cysts that may form in the ovaries, is a hormone disorder that causes irregular menstrual cycles, obesity, and infertility, among other symptoms. If untreated, it can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and uterine cancer. This is a book about and by PCOS women (coauthors Boss and Sterling both have it; physician Legro is an expert on the syndrome), which is evident in their easy-to-understand descriptions of the disorder, its symptoms, medical diagnosis, and treatments (including alternative methods) as well as the emotional impact. Colette Harris's PCOS: A Woman's Guide to Dealing with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (LJ 8/00) is a more difficult read (more medical jargon with a more British slant) but does offer a four-point management plan to combat the disorder. Both volumes are valuable to any women's health collection, but Boss and Sterling's is preferable to an American audience with its easy-to-read format, separate chapter on infertility, and important references to national organizations like Resolve. 2.0 out of 5 stars O.K. but others much better!, December 12, 2000
By David H Israel "dpisrael" (Coral Springs, FL United States) - See all my reviews
With three new books out about PCOS I eagerly looked forward to this book. What good info! Easy to read! Maybe too easy? The information found could be found in intro articles about the condition. the other two new books out at the latter end of 2000 are much more information for the "in need of info patient" If you know very little this book is a great start, if you have the basics down look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, December 15, 2000
By Tammy (California) - See all my reviews
I read this book and found it be very informative. It's written in plain english with no big complicated words, therefore easy for any person to read. Through study, I have found that there are many women out there who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome and they don't know alot about the disorder , which causes irregular menstrual cycles, excess facial and body hair, weight gain, and adult acne. It's also a leading cause of infertility and if left untreated, the condition carries long term risk for endometrial cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. This book sheds light on the condition, it explains it well, talks about over-coming symptoms, choosing a doctor, getting diagnosed and coping with the emotional impact. I think the book is very informative and I highly recommend it to all women, if you don;t suffer from polcystic ovary syndrome, chances are you might know someone who does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best source of information for women with PCOS, May 25, 2002
By A Customer
I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and bought every book I could find on the subject. After reading all of them, I still think that this is the best choice. It has so much information that is easy to understand. I found out some things about this syndrome that I had not been aware of before, all thanks to this book. The book breaks down all the information on the subject to make it easy to comprehend. I placed an order for several other books so that I can give them to family members who don't understand much about this condition. I also ordered a copy for my doctor!
