3.0 out of 5 stars Wild Goose Chase, October 23, 2003
By Inflated Expectations "John Q Public" (The Doghouse Upper Mongolia) - See all my reviews
The original source, or well spring, for this style of qigong was Grandmaster Yang Mei-Jun who recently died at the astounding old age of 107! Unfortunately for the fellow demonstrating on this video, Grandmaster Yang only sanctioned three "official" teachers or disciples of her ancient Wild Goose style in North America: Masters Hui Liu, Bingkun Hu and Michael Tse.

For the best combination of books/videos on the subject I would use Michael Tse's tome "Wild Goose Qigong 1st 64 Movements" (available via www.qimagazine.com) and Dr. Bingkun Hu's outstanding selection of videos at www.threegeese.com. I'm also partial to Wen-Mei Yu's book "Chi Kung" and her complementary set of three videos even though she isn't an official teacher. (Alternatively, use the two Wild Goose videos -- 1st 64 and 2nd 64 Movements -- by Lu Yuzhi.) For the final word on the subject, though, I'd follow the teachings of one of the three official disciples.

Summary: If you're gonna go to the trouble of learning an 1800-year-old skill, ya might as well do it right!

The form demonstrated by Master Zhang on this video is an ancient qigong set, which has benefited Chinese people for centuries. Hong-Chao Zhang is a well-known, accomplished and humble master, who has a deep understanding of qigong theory and principles. It's clear in the graceful and fluid motion demonstrated that he is an exceptional teacher of Chinese Qigong.

It is nicely filmed in a training studio, with clear instruction, and traditional Chinese music throughout.

Most important in any of the Chinese martial arts is that the theory and principles are studied and understood, because this root is the source of successful training. When a master truly understands qigong theory, he then understands the reason for each movement and method of Qi circulation, and the human body in general. For this reason, he is uniquely qualified to comment on and instruct any and all qigong sets, as the theory is true throughout. This keeps the art 'alive'. It is unimportant which lineage the exercise comes from. Any sincere student of the mar
