2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed, April 5, 2007
This book is in a textbook format and like many textbooks, it covers a wide breadth of information, but very little depth. The authors knowledge is quite impressive. Unfortunately, I was looking for more in depth information regarding both the rationale for deciding where to train and at what frequencies, along with a more in depth discussion of more complex topics such as downtraining. None of this was given more than superficial discussion and the majority of information pertains to persons with ADHD, which although the authors' area of expertise, for me did not generalize to other conditions.

Another feature I was dissapointed with was the authors tendency to frequently switch between discussions of different software programs without going into in depth discussion of any single system. It neither clarified "how to" with any specific system, nor did it provide useful information as to the range of techniques that can be used with any one system.

Overall, I was impressed with the depth of knowledge of the authors, but very little else. From a pragmatic perspective I found the book of limited value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intro to Neurofeedback from masters, November 23, 2007
By Joseph Barr (Deerfield, Illinois USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Thompson's book is a comprehensive introduction to the practice of neurofeedback. They happen to regularly do workshops at professional meetings to prepare practitioners to pass the international certification exam. This book will ready you for the exam and hits the key basics on neurofeedback.

This book does not describe specific software programs, those books are elsewhere. This belongs on every practitioner's bookshelf. it may be a bit taxing for someone looking for an elementary first neurofeedback book.

5.0 out of 5 stars So you want to understand Neurofeedback, July 28, 2008
By Freysson "freysson" (McDonough, Ga USA) - See all my reviews
I have had this book for several years now and have used it extensively. It is not for someone just thinking about if they should get into neurofeedback. It seems to me to be for the person who has taken the first few steps and needs a systematic guide and resource to actually doing the work. If you want to understand basic theory, basic neuroanatomy, the basics of frequencies, etc. this book will give it to you, and do it in a practical way that will make you a more balanced and informed therapist.

This does NOT give specific protocols and it is difficult to understand how it could. The basic paradigm is to observe where and how there are abnormalities then correlate them to the symptoms and make decisions based on all this data considered together. It is much better at helping you to understand why a protocol will work and the basis for developing them than in giving the protocols in a cookbook fashion.

These authors are real masters in their field. One is a psychologist, the other a psychiatrist, so it is heavy on the basic science background behind the treatment and the rationale behind doing the work.

If you are serious about understanding this exciting field, this book is a must have.
