Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up-This comprehensive tutorial opens with a discussion of the importance of learning how to manage and invest money and offers both advice and strategies. The authors explain the basics of investing, and then describe how to read and interpret balance sheets and income statements, how to understand the stock market, and how to evaluate and choose stocks for the long-term strategies they recommend. They also cover mutual funds, explain the various ways to purchase stocks, and describe income-tax implications for this audience. Throughout, they encourage "Teenvestors" to visit their Web site for further information and updates. The information is accurate, objective, and helpful. A few tables accompany the text. While this how-to book doesn't really compare to extant works, its strong message that readers need to take charge of their own financial futures and the practical advice it offers to help them do so will ensure an audience for it.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

Product Description

A practical guide for teaching teens the principles of investing including how to invest in stocks, mutual funds, and other financial instruments. Parents are also instructed on how to help their children join the 51 million stockholders in the United States and to own assets that will make their money grow. The book promotes the idea that kids are intellectually capable of understanding investment basics. It does so by using one of the most effective tools for learning yet at our disposal-the Internet-to point them to sites that will help them learn all they need to know about investing. Finally, here is a "youth friendly" approach that makes understanding investing easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Boost for TeenAge Money Matters, May 29, 2008
I really enjoyed this book. To me it's not so much about investing as the philosphy of earning money (odd jobs around the house or neighborhood) and then what to do with it. Life has to be more than simply expecting an entitlement (a.k.a. allowance) and stashing it away until the desired level is reached. This book helps people step into the creative flow at an early age, and I applaud the authors for what they have done.

2.0 out of 5 stars Teenvestor.com is out-of-date, September 23, 2007
It is unfortunate that I find this book while trying to get my daughter interested in how money really works and an understanding what investing is. I say unfortunate because I went to http://www.teenvestor.com and became very disappointed. The first thing I noticed on the home page is some sort of stock index. One that seems to be an index of teenvestor.com stocks. Sounds reasonable. The problem is the quote is from mid 2006 - almost 1 1/2 years old!!! Clicking on it still showed the same 2006 figures. Further investigation shows the copyright date of the website to be 2003!

This is very disappointing. I cannot stress enough how schools totally ignore financial matters when it comes to educating our children. No wonder our children graduate college only to be immediately drowned in debt.

I very much would have enjoyed purchasing a book like this if the relevant website was up-to-date. Being up-to-date would tell me they are serious about the book and want our children to succeed.

This does not appear to be the case.
